So, about an hour ago, I had my English final. The assignment was to write an essay answering this question:
Does humankind today place more value on community or on the self?
My essay turned out to be more along the lines of a sermon preaching the gospel of philanthropy, but that’s not the point. The point is that this little sentence got me thinking.
It should get us all thinking.
Have we really become a selfish people? Looking around, there are thousands of ways to broadcast your inner workings to the world. I mean, look where we are now: tumblr, capital of teenage internet rants. (Surprise! You’re semi-reading on of these right now.) But, as I was working through my essay, I began to question what would happen if we all started using these social networking platforms for the greater good? What if we started connecting with other people online, instead of using it just as a vehicle to disconnect ourselves from reality?
We have countless opportunities at our fingertips; it’s just up to us to use them.
I’m not saying that people are not already using the Web for connecting purposes, but just think of all of the people that are using it as a shield. Think of the immeasurable number of people that use the screen as a wall, instead of a mirror. What if we could reach out to these people? What if we could let them know that we’re here? Because, honestly, we all know that the internet isn’t a private place. It hides nothing. Releasing a problem out into its inner workings is like sending out an S.OS. Someone is going to stumble across your rant. Someone is going to see your problems. Someone is going to identify with what you are going through. What if we could join together and become a new, unified, technological community?
I believe we can.
Perhaps it could start with just by sending that person you see with the sad status update a message letting them know it’s going to be okay. It doesn’t take a lot to offer comfort. A few simple words can make all of the difference, and with the speed at which the majority of us type, we’re only talking a few, minute seconds of your life to possibly make years of difference in someone else’s life.
Start today.
After all, we may have selfish tendencies every now and then, but doesn’t it hurt us to see others hurting? Don’t we all have and innate instinct to help, whether we act upon it or not?
Act upon it.
I closed my essay with some sentiment about achieving a better world and whatnot, but I’ll close this by reminding everyone that we all know someone who could use our help. We may not have paid much attention to them before, but no one’s life is perfect, not even yours. You may try and ignore the problems facing another person or you, but no problem can be overcome before it is thrust out into the open by words; talking is the first step to healing.
So, today, talk about it. Talk about your problems. Talk abut their problems. Talk about the world’s problems.
Talk it. Text it. Type it. Tweet it.
Start healing, and remember that you matter.
We all do.
THERE COULD POSSIBLY BE A TEEN TITANS MOVIE COMING OUT NEXT YEAR?!
……excuse me while I fail to contain my excitement.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
:D :D :D :D :D
If every piece of technology I come into contact with would cease to electrocute me.
I swear, some day soon I’m just going to become a hub of electricity.
Powering every appliance around me.
Coming soon to a household near you.
let’s give this another go, shall we?
